During the month of February 2006, the Atlanta Sports Hall of
Fame presented “Celebrating the Negro Leagues.” Over one thousand
students from six Atlanta area elementary and middle schools were
entertained with a first-hand account of the role of the Negro
Leagues in baseball. Former Negro League All-star and Atlanta Black
Cracker James “Red” Moore and Negro League historian and author Jim
Riley presented the program.
The sessions were held either on site at the schools or at Turner
Field. Those sessions at Turner Field included an exciting tour of
the stadium made possible by the Braves Museum, followed by lunch
sponsored by Moe’s Southwest Grill and Coca-Cola.
The sessions included a video on the Negro Leagues, a discussion on
the players and times of the Negro Leagues, and a question and
answer period. All of the classes were given age-appropriate books
on the Negro Leagues written by Jim Riley.
Thanks to Coca-Cola, Moe's Southwest Grill, the Atlanta Braves, Jim
Riley, and Red Moore for making this program possible.
Plans are underway to offer the unique program, which emphasizes
reading, to additional schools in the area.
